Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel welcomes the United States’ offer to engage in direct talks with North Korea on nuclear disarmament and de‑escalation (1 October 2017):
This is exactly the right approach and constitutes a major and courageous step by the United States. North Korea would be well advised to take seriously this offer of talks. I would now also greatly welcome a similar offer for Iran. A move by the United States to pull out of the nuclear agreement with Iran would undermine the credibility of the offer extended to North Korea.
Foreign Minister Gabriel has been calling for direct talks with North Korea for several weeks. Diplomacy is the only viable way to find a peaceful solution to the conflict and prevent nuclear armament in the Pacific region.
Given the threat of renewed conflict with Iran, both Foreign Minister Gabriel and Chancellor Merkel had, over the past few days, tried to convince the United States of the need for the nuclear agreement.
