Foreign Minister Steinmeier issued the following statement on 29 July 2016 prior to the planned demonstrations in Cologne:
Like freedom of expression, the freedom to demonstrate is a valuable and important asset in all democracies that is available to everyone and must be upheld. However, it must be clear that it is totally unacceptable to bring domestic conflicts from Turkey here to us in Germany and for anyone to intimidate people who have different political convictions. There is no room for this in Germany, and nor will we permit it. I know that the vast majority of people of Turkish descent living here in Germany see this in exactly the same way.
