Coordinator of Transatlantic Cooperation on the CETA agreement: “Shaping globalisation with Canada”
Today (29 February), EU Commissioner Cecilia Malmström and the Canadian Minister of International Trade Chrystia Freeland announced the completion of the legal review of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) negotiated between the EU and Canada. Jürgen Hardt, Member of the Bundestag and Coordinator of Transatlantic Cooperation, issued the following statement in this connection:
I am pleased that EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmström and her Canadian counterpart Chrystia Freeland today announced the conclusion of the legal review of the CETA agreement.
As part of this process, key amendments to the investor‑state dispute settlement system were agreed upon. It was possible to incorporate the demands of the European Parliament and many EU member states. This is clear proof that the concerns of EU citizens have been taken seriously and translated into concrete political action.
We should now work hard to ensure that the final signing and ratification of the CETA agreement take place as soon as possible. With this agreement, the EU and Canada are setting a high standard for free, fair and sustainable trade and are living up to their aspiration to actively shape the trade order of the 21st century.
