On 13 December a Federal Foreign Office spokesperson issued the following statement on the outbreaks of violence in Burundi at the weekend:
Far too many people have lost their lives in the violent outbreaks in Burundi over the past few days. We now expect the President and the Government in particular to take decisive action to stop the escalation of the violence and to bring those responsible to justice. It is important that the Government cooperates with the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the African Union observers to this end.
The mounting tensions in Burundi can only be resolved through extensive dialogue between the Government and all the conflict parties. We therefore expressly support the mediation efforts of the East African Community under the leadership of Uganda.
