Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier made the following comments on 29 October 2015 to the newspapers of the Funke media group on the eve of the meeting on Syria held in Vienna:
The meeting in Vienna has brought about movement in the diplomacy on Syria.
If we can manage for the first time after almost five years of civil war to bring all the players and powers to one table, it would at least provide a small glimmer of hope that there can be a turnaround in Syria. That is not enough for the millions of victims of war and violence, nor for the refugees, but it would signify progress.
We cannot expect all the problems and concrete conflicts of interest to disappear overnight. That will require much more than one meeting in Vienna. However, it would be an important step forward which could lead to further talks and negotiations.
