A Federal Foreign Office Spokesperson issued the following statement in Berlin on the air strike in a suburb of Damascus on 16 August:
As far as we know, the Assad regime’s air force has bombed a market in Douma, with devastating results, killing possibly more than 100 people and injuring countless more.
We condemn these atrocities, like all those carried out by the Assad regime and other armed groups in Syria, in the strongest possible terms.
It is terrible that innocent civilians are the victims of these dreadful acts of violence time and again. We hope that all sides will realise at some point that the situation can only be resolved by a political settlement, that is, by talks on Syria’s future.
