On 1 July, a Federal Foreign Office spokesperson issued the following statement on the attacks in the Sinai Peninsula in which, according to the Egyptian authorities, more than 70 people were killed:
Today’s series of attacks are the latest in a chain of fatal assaults on Egyptian security forces, especially in the north of the Sinai Peninsula. The fact that the terrorist militia ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attacks highlights once more the terrorist group’s ruthless willingness to use violence for its ends. The German Government condemns the series of attacks in the Sinai Peninsula in the strongest possible terms. Our thoughts and heartfelt sympathy are with those whose loved ones have been murdered and with the Egyptian people.
