Foreign Minister Steinmeier on the Women’s World Cup

07.06.2015 - Press release

Foreign Minister Steinmeier issued the following statement in Berlin on 7 June , looking ahead to Germany’s first match in the Women’s World Cup:

Now it’s getting serious: our World Cup in Canada kicks off today with a first match against Côte d’Ivoire!

Over the last several years, the team around trainer Sylvie Neid have shown time and again that they have what it takes. With their superb football, their hard work and the great heart and passion they put into it, as well as real fair play, they promote Germany and a clean sport not governed by corrupt functionaries.

We could not wish for better ambassadors for Germany. I’ll have my fingers crossed today for this excellent and technically accomplished team to experience their first success of this championship.

With a bit of luck and lots of footballing skill, the end of this tournament will hopefully see Germany enjoying a place in another World Cup Final. I look forward to it!
