A Federal Foreign Office spokesperson issued the following statement today (20 May):
The Yemen conference which finished in Riyadh yesterday was an important initial step in overcoming the crisis in the country. Further negotiations incorporating all relevant groups must now follow swiftly.
The German Government is doing all it can to support United Nations Special Envoy Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, who is working to achieve an inclusive negotiation process.
The United Nations is the right forum in which to seek a lasting diplomatic solution to the crisis. A renewed and longer-standing ceasefire is urgently needed to enable a proper peace process to take place.
We call on all parties to the conflict to help UN Special Envoy Ould Cheikh Ahmed succeed in his efforts, to stop the current fighting, to secure unrestricted humanitarian access and to facilitate negotiations under the aegis of the United Nations.
