Foreign Minister Steinmeier gave the following statement on 26 April on the appointment of Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed as the new United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen:
I welcome the fact that with Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, the United Nations has so swiftly appointed a new Special Envoy for Yemen. There is no more time to lose now in resuming the mediation process led by the United Nations. The prerequisite for this is a real end to the hostilities.
It must be clear to all sides that a lasting solution to the political and humanitarian crisis in Yemen can only be achieved through an inclusive political process. Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed is an experienced diplomatic agent who is very well acquainted with the region and the particularly difficult situation in Yemen. We will do whatever we can to support his efforts.
