German Government condemns terrorist attacks on mosques in Yemen

20.03.2015 - Press release

A Federal Foreign Office spokesperson issued the following statement in Berlin concerning the terrorist attacks on two mosques in the Yemeni capital Sana'a on 20 March:

The barbaric murder of dozens of worshippers during Friday prayer is another cynical attempt to stir up hate and violence between different population groups.

To ensure that terrorist groups in Yemen do not gain more ground, all political forces must work to resolve the current national crisis. The ongoing power vacuum is continuing to destabilise the country. All national and regional players have a responsibility to prevent a further escalation of the violence and to participate constructively in the mediation efforts of UN Special Adviser Benomar.

Background information:

At least 30 people were killed in attacks during Friday prayer in the Yemeni capital Sana'a. The suicide bombings were targeted at two mosques which are evidently mainly used by Shiite Houthi supporters.
