German Government condemns the abduction of Yemeni presidential aide Mubarak

17.01.2015 - Press release

A Federal Foreign Office Spokesperson issued the following statement in Berlin on 17 January on the abduction of Yemeni presidential aide Dr Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak in the Yemeni capital Sana’a:

The German Government condemns the abduction of Dr Mubarak in the strongest possible terms and calls on the kidnappers to release him immediately. We urge all political stakeholders to refrain from such acts and to play a constructive role in the transformation process.

Dr Ahmed Awad Mubarak, chief of staff of Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, was abducted in the Yemeni capital Sana’a on 17 January, the day when the first draft of a new Yemeni constitution was presented to the public.

Yemen has been undergoing political transformation since 2011. The draft constitution is an important element of the initiative by the Gulf Cooperation Council to restructure the country. Kidnappings have been a regular occurrence in Yemen for years.
