Foreign Minister Steinmeier on the parliamentary elections in Moldova

02.12.2014 - Press release

Foreign Minister Steinmeier issued the following statement on 2 December, on the margins of the Meeting of NATO Ministers of Foreign Affairs, on the parliamentary elections in Moldova:

The success of these elections now offers the political leaders in Chisinau a historic chance to consistently continue with the reforms initiated several years ago.

That does not entail any either/or decisions on any particular political direction. Moldova can only have a positive future if Chisinau maintains beneficial relations with Europe and Russia.

The association agreement serves as a good foundation for relations with the European Union. It is very much in Germany’s interest to maintain good relations with Moldova. We will continue to do all we can to provide support. Naturally this includes dealing with the difficult conflict in Transdniestria.

I am pleased that the parliamentary elections in Moldova were so well organised and that they were conducted peacefully. The positive assessment of the election observers is excellent news, as, in the region, such a result is still by no means a given.
