Foreign Minister Steinmeier on the situation in Yemen

11.10.2014 - Press release

Foreign Minister Steinmeier issued the following statement in Berlin on 11 October on the situation in Yemen:

The recent developments in Yemen threaten the country’s hard‑fought transition process. The signed peace treaty must be respected and implemented by all political forces, including the Houthis. This includes their disarmament, withdrawal from Sana’a and recognition of state authority. The Federal Government is supporting President Hadi’s efforts to implement the peace treaty and to pursue the transition process.

The despicable terrorist attacks on Thursday in Sana’a and Al Mukalla that killed 67 people show how urgent it now is to put a stop to the violence in Yemen. Effective state institutions are an essential prerequisite for this.
