Welcome
Foreign Minister Steinmeier on the referendum of Scottish independence:“People want a strong Scotland in a strong Great Britain”
On the margins of his trip to New York, Foreign Minister Steinmeier issued the following statement today (19 September) on the referendum on Scottish independence, in which the majority voted in favour of Scotland remaining part of the United Kingdom:
There was great interest in Germany in the exciting debate on Scottish independence, which was conducted in Scotland, but also in other parts of the United Kingdom. I have great respect for Great Britain’s commendable democratic culture, which was expressed here.
The voting results send a clear message: people want a strong Scotland in a strong Great Britain. I believe that this is a good decision for Scotland, Great Britain and Europe.
We hope that the United Kingdom will remain an energetic and committed partner in Europe and look forward to further close cooperation in a spirit of mutual trust.
