Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier issued the following statement on the negotiations taking place in Cairo on a lasting ceasefire in the Middle East conflict (07 August).
Now, for the first time, serious discussions are taking place in Cairo on a lasting ceasefire.
The parties are aware that the status quo must not be reverted to, but that long‑term solutions are now needed – for both Israel’s security and Gaza’s economic development.
Together with our European partners we are ready to make a contribution – for example with an EU mission to monitor border crossings. We are currently in intensive talks with all parties in order to clarify what would be necessary for this.
