Foreign Minister Steinmeier welcomes initiative to form a government in Iraq
Commenting on Iraqi President Fuad Masum tasking Haidar al-Abadi with forming a government, Foreign Minister Steinmeier issued the following statement today (11 August):
Now that President Masum has given Mr al‑Abadi this mandate, Iraq has taken a major step forward in the political process of forming a new government. The country urgently needs a functioning government that is accepted by all groups within the population if it is to put a stop to the brutal activities of the ISIS terrorists and dry up their political support.
