During his visit to Mongolia, Foreign Minister Steinmeier issued the following statement today (7 July) in Ulan Bator on the case of a German national who is under investigation on suspicion of spying for a foreign intelligence service:
We still need to further investigate this matter. However, should the involvement of US intelligence services be confirmed, then this is an incident that makes it impossible for the political community to simply return to business as usual.
We will work hard to ensure that the remaining questions are resolved and then decide on an appropriate response. I hope that the United States will do everything it can to help clarify the matter in hand as quickly as possible.
