During the joint press conference with Tunisia’s Foreign Minister Mongi Hamdi in Berlin today (19 June), Foreign Minister Steinmeier issued the following statement on the situation in Egypt:
Today we also spoke about Egypt. Since Tuesday a new government has been in office in Cairo and we are relying on this new leadership to take responsibility for developing economic prospects and ensuring economic stability in the country.
In our discussion we agreed that Egypt is key to the whole region’s stability. It is one of the largest and most influential countries in the Arab League.
It is in all of our interests for the political polarisation in Egypt to be overcome, step by step, in the coming years. We want to help with this process.
