Foreign Minister Steinmeier on the attack on the German Ambassador’s residence in Athens

30.12.2013 - Press release

Foreign Minister Steinmeier issued the following statement today (30 December):

I am very glad that nobody was injured in the attack on our Ambassador’s residence in Athens.

We take this incident very seriously. There is no justification whatsoever for such an attack on a representative of our country.

However, the perpetrators will not succeed in destroying the good relations between Germany and Greece and the German and Greek people.

I thank Prime Minister Samaras and Foreign Minister Venizelos for their quick reaction. They promised us to step up security on the ground and to do everything in their power to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.

Last night unknown attackers shot at the German Ambassador’s residence in Athens. Nobody came to harm.

That very night, Prime Minister Samaras and Foreign Minister Venizelos contacted German Ambassador Wolfgang Dold, expressly deploring the incident and announcing that investigations would commence immediately.

This morning, Foreign Minister Steinmeier spoke to Ambassador Wolfgang Dold and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos about the matter.
