Federal Government condemns attack on Camp Liberty in Iraq
According to UNAMI (United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq), numerous shells were fired on the evening of 26 December 2013 at Baghdad international airport. Several rockets and grenades hit nearby Camp Liberty where some 3000 members of the Iranian opposition group People’s Mojahedin live. According to as yet unconfirmed reports, up to three Camp Liberty inhabitants were killed and several others injured during the attack.
A Federal Foreign Office spokesperson issued the following statement today on the incident:
The Federal Government condemns the renewed attacks on Baghdad international airport, which killed several people in nearby Camp Liberty. The Federal Government regrets the tragic loss of life and conveys its condolences to the bereaved.
We call upon the Iraqi Government to cooperate closely with UNAMI in fully investigating the causes of these attacks. The management of Camp Liberty should do its part in the process. The Federal Government calls upon the Iraqi Government to live up to its responsibility to protect the inhabitants of Camp Liberty.
