Foreign Minister Steinmeier today (25 December) issued the following statement on the bloody attacks against members of the Christian minority in Iraq:
It is appalling that the perpetrators will stop at nothing, not even at carrying out bloody attacks against Christians on Christmas Day.
I utterly condemn the use of terrorist violence against members of religious minorities in Iraq. The situation in Iraq is becoming no easier. And the continuing civil war in neighbouring Syria, with all its extreme brutality, is further increasing the instability in the country. It is therefore all the more important that Prime Minister Maliki’s Government meet its responsibility to protect all minorities in the country and to tackle terrorism and violence with every determination.
Numerous people were killed or severely injured in attacks on members of the Christian minority in the capital Baghdad today.
