The Federal Foreign Office welcomes the election of the Bundesrechnungshof (German SAI) as the External Auditor for the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). At the UNIDO General Conference in Lima (Peru) Germany was the clear winner, defeating several other candidates.

By electing the German SAI, the 170 UNIDO member states have once again demonstrated their confidence in the institution, following its last term of office from 1994 to 2002. The appointment of a new External Auditor at UNIDO comes during a process of critical reform, in which supervisory bodies such as the External Auditor have a significant role to play with regard to its practical implementation.

The German Supreme Audit Institution can boast several decades of experience in auditing international organisations. Its responsibilities have included auditing the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons as well as membership of the highly regarded United Nations Panel of External Auditors for many years.
