Foreign Minister Westerwelle on Syria: hope that a political process will become discernable in New York

24.09.2013 - Press release

Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle issued the following statement today (24 September) at the start of his visit to New York to participate in the UN General Assembly:

We hope that a political process for Syria will become discernable this week.

It would be important that agreement is reached on the timetable. That means setting a date for a conference in Geneva.

There will be no military solution in Syria but, rather, only a political solution which brings enduring peace and stability.

It is therefore vital that we as the international community support the political process.

It is also important that we work towards reaching a ceasefire. We intend to use this week to explore the scope for this.
