Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle issued the following statement today (24 September) on the fringes of the UN General Assembly in New York on the situation in Egypt:
We are following the action taken against the Muslim Brotherhood by the judiciary and the authorities in Egypt very closely.
The action is being directed at an organisation which has been deeply rooted in Egyptian society for decades. The groups within society represented by the Muslim Brotherhood must be able to enjoy their right to be involved in shaping the future of the country in a peaceful way.
We expect the Egyptian leadership to pave the way for a credible political process. The impression that the judiciary is being used to pursue political opponents must not be created.
