It was with profound sadness that I learnt of the death of Marcel Reich-Ranicki. We mourn with his family.

With Marcel Reich-Ranicki we have lost a truly leading voice in German literary criticism. His words were always unequivocal and enriched debates over many decades in our country; his love of German literature spurred on many people in our country. We Germans will never forget that, although he was a young survivor of the Warsaw Ghetto, he never turned his back on Germany.
