Westerwelle: Germany ready to provide technical assistance in destruction of Syria’s chemical weapons

15.09.2013 - Press release

Foreign Minister Westerwelle is calling for the US‑Russian agreement to establish control over and destroy Syria’s chemical weapons to be promptly and rigorously implemented. Germany will support the international Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons based in The Hague in its efforts to perform this task and is ready to provide technical and financial assistance to this end. In this connection Foreign Minister Westerwelle today (15 September) issued the following statement:

Germany supports the US‑Russian agreement to establish control over and destroy Syria’s chemical weapons. The important thing now is that verifiable steps be taken to implement this agreement.

Here both the United Nations Security Council and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) have a key role to play.

Germany supports the OPCW in carrying out its mandate to advance the worldwide prohibition and destruction of chemical weapons. We want to see a worldwide ban on chemical weapons and the destruction of all stockpiles, because this will make the world a safer place. We therefore stand ready to provide technical or financial assistance also for the destruction of Syria’s chemical weapons.
