Federal Foreign Minister Westerwelle welcomes US-Russian agreement on Syria
The Russian and US Foreign Ministers, meeting in Geneva, have agreed on further steps for the monitoring and destruction of Syria’s chemical weapons. Commenting on this, Foreign Minister Westerwelle issued the following statement today (14 September):
I welcome the agreement between the United States and Russia on the immediate disclosure of chemical weapons in Syria. If these words are now followed by deeds, the likelihood of a political solution will increase significantly.
Lasting peace in Syria can only be achieved by a political, not a military solution.
