I am pleased that Commission President Barroso underscored the importance of fundamental European values and the rule of law. That is precisely the essence of the rule of law initiative that I have launched together with other European foreign ministers.

We need a political mechanism within the valid treaties which enables possible problematic developments in individual member states to be tackled swiftly and effectively. It is good that the Commission and its President have received our initiative positively.
