Human Rights Commissioner concerned by attacks on homosexuals in Russia

06.08.2013 - Press release

Federal Government Human Rights Commissioner Markus Löning issued the following statement today (6 August) following the latest reports of attacks on homosexuals and the publication of related videos:

The German Government is very concerned by reports that homosexuals are increasingly being subjected to violence in Russia. The Russian Government must ensure that everyone in Russia may live without fear of persecution and discrimination. The dignity of every individual must be protected.
It is the duty of the Government to counter the homophobic attitudes sometimes found in Russian society. Such a climate of intolerance is unacceptable; the intentional discrimination and stigmatisation of gays and lesbians has no place in a modern society.
