Federal Foreign Office calls for investigation into violent attack in Egypt
The following statement has been issued by a spokesperson for the Federal Foreign Office:
We are appalled at reports that a violent incident claimed up to forty lives in Cairo this morning. There is a very worrying possibility that the violence in Egypt is going to escalate yet further.
Minister Westerwelle has repeatedly stated, with regard to the situation in Egypt and elsewhere, that violence is not an acceptable means of political engagement. We call on all those in positions of responsibility to keep a cool head and eschew all forms of violence.
We expect the events of today to be subject to swift investigation by an independent authority.
