Following talks between Foreign Minister Westerwelle and Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Peiris, a Federal Foreign Office spokesperson made the following statement:
“Foreign Minister Westerwelle has clearly expressed the Federal Government’s official protest against the arrest of a Friedrich Ebert Foundation employee.
He voiced the clear expectation that German political foundations be able to continue their work unhindered in Sri Lanka in the future.”
A representative of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation in Sri Lanka was taken into custody in Colombo today (13 June). After a guarantee had been provided, she was later provisionally released. The German Ambassador to Sri Lanka protested against this action in strong terms.
The talks with Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister were held this afternoon in the Federal Foreign Office.
