Foreign Minister Westerwelle issued the following statement today (5 June) on the election of Pakistan’s new Prime Minister:
I congratulate Nawaz Sharif on his election as Prime Minister of Pakistan. The recent parliamentary elections and now the election of the new Prime Minister by parliament are important steps towards further consolidating democracy in Pakistan. I am confident that the new Government will use its popular backing and clear majority in parliament to make rapid progress on the necessary economic and structural reforms.
Nawaz Sharif was today elected Prime Minister by the members of Pakistan’s parliament, winning 244 of 342 votes.
