Westerwelle: SPD has played a key role in shaping Germany’s foreign policy
Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle issued the following statement today (23 May) to mark the 150th anniversary celebrations of the SPD:
The SPD can look back on a great and proud tradition which stretches back 150 years.
In the sphere of foreign policy, it has played a key role in mapping out our country’s course.
The SPD-FDP coalition’s Ostpolitik was a historic step towards overcoming the division of our country and of Europe. During their time in government, the Social Democrat Chancellor Willy Brandt and his Liberal Foreign Minister Walter Scheel paved the way for German unity with their courageous policy.
