Human Rights Commissioner appalled by executions in Japan

26.04.2013 - Press release

Markus Löning, the Federal Government Commissioner for Human Rights, issued the following statement today (26 April) in response to two executions in Japan:

I am appalled that Japan has again executed two people.
The death penalty is an inhumane and cruel punishment. The German Government is against capital punishment under any circumstances and is campaigning for its universal abolition.
I call on the Japanese Government to refrain from carrying out further death sentences and to conduct an open debate in society about the death penalty. The death penalty is an anachronism in the 21st century!
