German Government calls for transparency on military spending

14.04.2013 - Press release

Michael Georg Link, Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office, issued the following statement to mark the Global Day of Action on Military Spending on 15 April:

“Transparency on military spending is crucial for disarmament and arms control. The United Nations Report on Military Expenditures is an important contribution here. The German Government therefore calls upon all states around the world to report their military expenditures to the United Nations. This issue is of great importance to Federal Foreign Minister Westerwelle too.”

Further information:

The German Government is making available 75,000 euros to support the United Nations in developing a more efficient database on military spending. Since 1980, UN member states have been called upon to report – voluntarily – by 30 April their military expenditures of the previous year. The reporting system is designed to boost confidence‑building and help reduce military spending.
