Syria: Foreign Minister Westerwelle calls for the UN chemical weapons experts to be allowed to enter the country

09.04.2013 - Press release

Foreign Minister Westerwelle is having talks in The Hague today with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. The Minister has commented as follows on the Assad regime’s refusal to allow independent UN chemical weapons experts into Syria:

“The mutual accusations concerning the use of chemical weapons in Syria is extremely alarming. They must be investigated as quickly as possible. I strongly urge the Assad regime to now allow the UN experts, who it itself requested, to enter the country without delay.

Germany is prepared to provide the UN mission with personnel and logistical support. This is one of the issues I will be discussing in The Hague today with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).”

The German Government is in close contact with the United Nations and the OPCW regarding the preparation of the UN mission. Germany is prepared to provide the planned mission by independent chemical weapons experts to Syria with personnel, logistical and material support.
