Foreign Minister Westerwelle issued the following statement in Berlin today (8 April) on the current tensions on the Korean peninsula:
We are very concerned at the tensions created by North Korea on the Korean peninsula.
I strongly urge the leadership in Pyongyang not to inflame the conflict on the Korean peninsula any further. The bellicose rhetoric must cease.
Threats of further nuclear and missile testing constitute clear breaches of international agreements. This policy of deliberate destabilization and escalation poses a serious risk to peace and security in the region and to the entire international security architecture.
In this connection, I expressly welcome the constructive role being played by China.
