Foreign Minister Westerwelle on talks with Iran in Almaty: intensive, but a major rift remains

07.04.2013 - Press release

Foreign Minister Westerwelle issued the following statement today (7 April) on the recent talks between the E3+3 and Iran in Almaty:

I welcome the fact that intensive talks on issues related to the nuclear programme have taken place between the E3+3 Group and Iran.

However, we must recognize that a clear rift remains between Iran’s position and that of the international community.

We continue to call upon Iran to engage with the substance of the E3+3 proposals so that the negotiation process can have a chance of success. We want a diplomatic solution, but we cannot accept tactics of playing for time.
