Federal Foreign Minister Westerwelle concerned about developments in the Central African Republic
Federal Foreign Minister Westerwelle issued the following statement in Berlin today (25 March) on the situation in the Central African Republic:
We are following the recent developments in the Central African Republic and the rebels’ advance on the capital Bangui with great concern.
I urge all parties to exercise the utmost restraint and appeal to them to re-engage in dialogue.
The country’s constitutional order must be restored. The protection of the civilian population and foreigners must be the top priority.
The current situation in the Central African Republic is difficult to monitor. The Federal Foreign Office has advised against travelling to the Central African Republic since late 2012. Only a few German citizens remain in the country. The responsible embassy in Yaoundé (Cameroon) is in permanent contact with the Federal Foreign Office Situation Centre.
In January 2013 the Government of the Central African Republic and the rebels met in Gabon to make political arrangements for a peace settlement for the country.
