Foreign Minister Westerwelle pays tribute to Chinua Achebe

Foreign Minister Westerwelle issued the following statement on the death of the Nigerian writer Chinua Achebe:

With Chinua Achebe’s death we have lost one of the truly major voices in world literature. Achebe’s renowned novels such as ‘Things Fall Apart’ offered readers around the world a powerful up‑close view of historical upheaval in Africa.

We join the writer’s family and all of Nigeria in mourning the loss of this great and important literary figure.

Nigerian writer Chinua Achebe died yesterday at the age of 82. He won global acclaim for novels including ‘Things Fall Apart’ and ‘Arrow of God’. His books have been translated into more than 50 languages. In 2002 Achebe received the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade.
