Foreign Minister Westerwelle on the release of kidnapped UN observers

09.03.2013 - Press release

Foreign Minister Westerwelle today (9 March) issued the following statement on the release of the UN observers kidnapped in the Golan Heights:

It is good that the United Nations military observers are free again at last. I am relieved that all the members of the UNDOF mission have arrived safe and well in Jordan.
We condemn in the strongest terms the taking of neutral UN personnel as hostages. The work of the United Nations on the border between Israel and Syria in the Golan Heights is very important and must continue.
The events of the past few days have shown that the civil war in Syria is extremely dangerous not only for the UN observers, but for the entire region. We will continue to support the people in Syria, but we absolutely must avoid a situation where the civil war in Syria spills over its borders and into neighbouring countries and the region as a whole.
