Federal Foreign Minister Westerwelle relieved about departure of a German citizen from Syria

Today a German citizen who has been missing in Syria since the end of December 2012 was able to leave the country for Lebanon and was taken in by the German Embassy there.

In Berlin today (5 March) a Federal Foreign Office spokesperson issued the following statement in this connection:

Federal Foreign Minister Westerwelle is relieved that the German citizen who has been missing for several months is now safe in the care of the German Embassy in Beirut.

The Federal Government has worked intensively to locate him and enable him to return home.

Foreign Minister Westerwelle would like to thank the Russian Government and in particular Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov for their assistance in enabling the German citizen to leave Syria.“

The man concerned is receiving extensive consular support from the German Embassy in Beirut.
