Today (6 February), Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle issued the following statement on the assassination of Tunisian politician Chokri Belaid:
“The news of the assassination of Tunisian opposition politician Chokri Belaid has shocked and saddened us. Our thoughts and deepest sympathy are with his family and also with his political companions.
Just the day before he was murdered, Chokri Belaid had warned of an escalation of political violence in Tunisia. With growing concern, we see his warnings confirmed.
In this critical phase, we call on all political leaders in Tunisia to preserve the legacy of the peaceful revolution and – regardless of party affiliation – to act in the best interest of the country.”
Chokri Belaid, a politician and lawyer, was shot dead leaving his home in Tunis this morning.
