An appeal from Markus Löning, Federal Government Commissioner for Human Rights Policy and Humanitarian Aid at the Federal Foreign Office, on Human Rights Day (10 December): “Everyone can help ensure protection for human rights worldwide.”
“Every day is a human rights day – but 10 December provides a special opportunity to think about this subject!
I was deeply affected by the pictures of the burning textiles factory in Bangladesh, because they made it terribly clear how bad the situation is in many countries when it comes to working conditions, wages and safety. Child labour, forced labour, even slavery are unfortunately still reality. Both governments and businesses have to take action. By introducing laws, regulations, controls and voluntary commitments, they can improve the lot of countless people.
But every single one of us can play a part in strengthening human rights. Ask about manufacturing conditions, or look out for certified products. Give gifts – but please give clean gifts!”
