Foreign Minister Westerwelle: UN vote is a mandate for direct peace negotiations

30.11.2012 - Press release

After a vote enhancing the status of the Palestinian representation at the United Nations last night, Foreign Minister Westerwelle issued the following statement this morning:

Yesterday’s vote in the UN General Assembly is a mandate for direct peace negotiations and should encourage the stakeholders to enter into direct talks as soon as possible. What matters in the current situation is not to allow a permanent stalemate to develop. Rather, everything should now be done to launch a joint effort to find a fair and just two-state solution.
I regret that the EU did not arrive at a common position. Germany remains fully committed to a two-state solution and lasting peace in the Middle East. We firmly stand by our responsibility for Israel and our engagement for a viable Palestinian state as a result of negotiations.

The Resolution enhancing the status of the Palestinian representation at the United Nations was adopted by a majority vote in the UN General Assembly. Germany abstained.
