Foreign Minister Westerwelle issued the following statement today (28 October) on the parliamentary elections in Ukraine:
“Today’s parliamentary elections are an important litmus test for democracy and the rule of law.
I have a clear expectation that the elections will be free and fair. We will observe this very carefully.
We hope for closer relations between the EU and Kyiv. The course towards that goal has been charted by the Association Agreement. Kyiv knows full well what steps we expect to be taken next: on the rule of law, the justice system and in particular with regard to the treatment of the opposition.
We want Ukraine to look towards the West and share European values.”
