Foreign Minister Westerwelle praised the provisional accord between the Philippine Government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Movement as a “historic step towards peace”. In a statement issued today (8 October), he said:
“I welcome the agreement reached by the Philippine Government and the Islamic rebels in the south on a provisional peace deal.
In spite of all the questions that remain unanswered, this is a historic step towards peace in Mindanao. For the first time there is reason to hope that the conflict will be resolved peacefully.
We encourage all parties to continue down this positive road and to implement this framework agreement step by step.”
