Minister of State Cornelia Pieper in Prague for the Day of German Unity

02.10.2012 - Press release

Cornelia Pieper, Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office, celebrated the Day of German Unity in Prague together with Reiner Haseloff, Minister-President of Land Saxony-Anhalt, Detlef Lingemann, German Ambassador in Prague, and representatives of the Government of the Czech Republic.

The famous announcement by Hans-Dietrich Genscher, the then German Foreign Minister, from the balcony of the German Embassy in Prague that thousands of East Germans could leave the GDR and gain their freedom had been made 23 years previously. “For us Germans, the German Embassy in Prague is, historically, a place of great emotion,” the Minister of State underlined. “It is wonderful to be in Prague, at the very place where the revolution for freedom began.”

Together with a delegation of entrepreneurs from Saxony-Anhalt led by Minister-President Reiner Haseloff, tribute was paid, together with the Czechs, to German Unity which could only work hand in hand with European unity.
