On the margins of the UN General Assembly the Future of Europe Group of EU foreign ministers had a meeting with European Council President Van Rompuy and European Commission President Barroso, at which they presented and handed over the final report on the Group’s work.
Together with his Polish, Austrian, Spanish, Belgian, Danish, Netherlands and Italian counterparts, Foreign Minister Westerwelle explained the pro-Europe thrust of the Group’s initiative.
In this connection he made the following comments:
With this report we hope to launch a pro-Europe debate. The answer to the debt and confidence crisis can only be a better Europe. Here in New York especially, where the whole international community has now gathered, one thing is very clear. If we are to safeguard our prosperity and European way of life in this globalized world, we must not only tackle the debt crisis, we must also develop convincing strategies for the long-term future.
